Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
